Just a quick post ex officio to express my warmest gratitude to everyone reading. Even when real life eats me for months at a time, you wonderful people continue to make this community everything I ever hoped it might possibly aspire to, and then some.

I'd also like to informally seek comments on the comm style. I know it's beautiful, and I totally adore [personal profile] branchandroot and [personal profile] dancing_serpent and their awesome design skills, but we've had the same style for a somewhat long time now. How do y'all feel about another call for our artistic community to showcase their skills and whip up some candidates for a new theme?

The class has started! Class syllabus and intro/registration.

So, is there any interest from people for a DW styles making course, run in this community? Basically, a series of lessons/projects spread over weeks that works on teaching you the ropes one by one, designed for people of multiple experience levels, with the goal of everybody at the end having created their own native DW core2 layout and having a solid understanding of how the S2 system works.

You could do only CSS portions (since DW layouts are designed to be very flexible with just CSS), or tinker with the S2 parts, too. While we go along, we can help each other as a group with questions on how to do X or Y for our layout. Experienced CSS people or style makers, even if they're not taking the course, are encouraged to poke their heads in and assist students. I'd also like for at least one or two experienced style people to be my betas for lesson plans and dedicated mentors for the students. (And mentors can be students, too, if they want to work on their own layout projects alongside the class--I plan on doing all the lessons myself, making me a student as well!)

Just a quick heads-up that I'm about to start fiddling with the community's tags. You can post your questions etc. as usual, but please wait with the tagging until the tags have been updated. Certain tags might also suddenly stop working. I'll let you know when it's done. Thanks!

As [personal profile] cesy pointed out, we were using one of the first styles evar here at s_s. I have for now changed the style to Mandala ('cuz I think it's pretty) two-column left-sidebar ('cuz IE6 doesn't choke too badly on any of it) as an interim measure, but I'm wondering a couple things.

Should we change our style on some rotating basis? Like, to whatever the current new-user default is? To one of the new styles whenever a code-push gives us new choices?

Should we have user-designed and user-customized styles? I.e., run a one-time or periodic contest to design the s_s style, with community voting and/or celebrity judges? Should we auction off styling rights, sort of like professional sports stadiums do with naming rights? And use the proceeds to ... that can be figured out later, but "donate to charity" or "buy something from the dw store to use as contest prizes" or "buy community paid time" come to mind as possible choices.

Should I make a poll with all these choices, and maybe some others, and post that? I probably should, but I want to get some community feedback about what choices should be presented before I make it.

I love how useful this community has become; it has been very gratifying to see it live up to its intended purpose as a first stop for advice on how to dabble and tinker with the style system. Because of this, I want to make sure it has everything it needs to take care of itself if I grow neglectful.

I'd like to extend a warm welcome to [personal profile] foxfirefey and [personal profile] afuna as co-administrators, and thank them both for accepting the positions. It's not like it's been work so far, but having a couple people around with spare sets of keys in case they're needed is usually a good idea.
