Comment expand links in a ver. 1 from-LJ layout

Accounts in question: nightfall_mods and its related accounts (links are in the sidebar.) Currently layout-testing on sanguine_saint where there's a ton of comments on the layout-test page, for convenience's sake, too. (Er... been using ?style=mine; I'll throw the layout up on that account in a min.)

Issue: There's no Expand link, in collapsed comments. I'd like there to be, but I'm only just now dipping my toes into S2 (core version 1, Style Contest from LJ. Well, specifically, from IJ.)

Bit of backstory: I spent many an hour doing up the graphics and CSS layout for a set of accounts (mod, comms, etc) to use in a game, and then we decided to head to DW with it. Rather than re-code the entirety of the layout for a DW base, after putting so much work into it and designing it with Style Contest in mind, I poked around for how to import LJ layout bases, and then found an older version of Style Contest over in InsaneJournal's customization sections (hooray!) which would work with little fuss. I used starlit's awesome guide and the info linked therein about the Friends/Reading page stuff, so that's gravy. Even poked through LJ's current version of Style Contest to fix the issue of making entry titles into permalinks like they should be. (The IJ copy of the layout's base code didn't do that.)

But I can't seem to figure out how to code the Expand functions into the layout so it will work. I'd try copying in the relevant lines from starlit's guide's copy of the FlexiSquares base, but that one's Expand links seem to want to act as permalinks rather than actually expanding the collapsed comments. (Unless I'm just doing something wrong, which I could be.) Copying the Expand function code from LJ's current Style Contest layout code gives me errors on compiling, so I haven't had luck there either so far.
