[personal profile] misstia posting in [community profile] style_system
hi! i freely admit i have 'the dumbz'....i don't want to import my theme/style from LJ, i am okay with the one i found here on DW....i would like to customize the header though and i have zero clue how to do that and i tried to find some info in FAQs, etc and i might have been looking wrong???? (i totally was looking wrong!)

i am using 'purple' for my journal style....

i DID find the CSS code to remove the 'recent entries' from the header but didn't want to add that yet lest it interfere with future CSS code additions.....and i know i can get rid of the 'profile module' too once i get the header sorted out.....

i'd like to put my journal name in the center and then have links under it (within the header) for: profile, friend's page (reading page), link to my domain, archive....i think this is possible??? i did buy a premium account here (sooo impressed with DW and how they value their users! :) i just don't know how and got really confused trying to find out how to do this.....maybe i need a different style?

i do know html, i know enough CSS to fiddle with it, but can't write CSS on my own....so i hoping someone can direct me somewhere as i have searched, but obviously am not searching in the right place....i saw where i can import a LJ style/theme, but i just want to customize a DW one.....

thank you in advance!!!

ETA: Resolved!! THANK YOU!!! :-)

To center the text in your header, add text-align: center; here

#header {
    background: #775577;
    color: #fcf0fc;
text-align: center;
}

As for the rest, I'm not sure how to go about that, because I don't see any navigation on your journal.

Well, I can get the navlinks into the header, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to make them line up in a row instead of a list, which is what I think you want? Sorry, maybe someone will come along that can complete the fix.

Have you tried display: inline? I think that should do it. (Don't have time to test it myself right now, I'm afraid.)

Oh, believe me, I tried that everywhere I could think of. It probably goes somewhere I didn't think of.

All the things you said you wanted fixed:

remove pagetitle (recent entries, etc):

#pagetitle { display: none; font-size: medium; }

Just a note -- even when I'm setting something to display: none, I always leave the rest of the stuff in there in case I change my mind. That way I don't have to try to remember what it should look like.

Change size of header to hold the links to 200px:

#header > .inner:first-child { margin: 1em;
    padding: .5em 1em;
    color: #fcf0fc;
background-color: #775577;
height: 200px;
 }

Move the nav links into the header - add this:

.module-navlinks .module-content {width: 1000px;  margin-top: -380px; margin-right: auto; margin-left: 100px; margin-bottom: 80px;  text-align: center;  }

That will put them in a list underneath your journal title. You may have to adjust the width and the margins for whatever your display size is. This isn't pretty, but it may give the appearance of what you want.

I cannot figure out how to take those links and make them not be in a list.

Oh! And you'll have to go into the wizard and turn that Navlinks module on again.

I might be wrong - anyone who wants to chime in and correct me, feel free - but if you can't put the navigation module in the header, then you might want to switch styles. I don't know about a link to your domain, but these are some of the styles I *do* know start with the navigation module (links to 'recent entries' 'archive' 'profile', etc) in the header:

Some others may let you rotate the Navigation module into the header, but I don't know which off the top of my head. :)

There is a way to get them up there by playing with the margins and width of the module. I've used it on Flexible Squares to put the sidebar right below the header stretching across the width of the journal. I'm testing the code.

For your navigation links, would you try this?

.module-navlinks {
background: transparent;
left: 1%;
position: absolute;
right: 1%;
text-align: center;
top: 4.5em;
}

.module-navlinks li {
display: inline;
}

.module-navlinks a {
padding: .5em;
}

.module-navlinks a.network,
.module-navlinks a.tags {
display: none;
}

This moved them to the top, below your title, and centered them for me but, depending on your font size, they may not be placed correctly.

Try and increase the value in "top: 4.5em;"

Sorry I should have explained. I'm talking about the code I gave you so the module, not your header. :)
