I just moved from Livejournal to Dreamwidth and I've run into this style problem. On some journals I have a quite large Active Entries box at the top of the screen. This doesn't show up on everyone's journals. I've gone into customize my style into the modules section and chose none for everything and it still shows up. I'm using the Argyle theme, which I really like, but the Active Entries box is bothering me.

Firstly, welcome to Dreamwidth!

There are actually two Argyle themes - one is for the Brittle layout and one is for the Crisped layout. It would be helpful if you could clarify which one are using.

Also, it sounds like you are forcing the site to display all journals in your own theme (style=mine), given that you're talking about other journals but mentioned a specific theme - is that correct? Assuming it is correct...

Changing the order of modules will only effect their visibility/order in your own journal. Even if you use style=mine, you'll still see modules in other journals in the order the owner has selected. (style=mine only changes the colours.)

In general, layouts at DW have a number of layout options - one column, two columns (sidebar left or sidebar right), three columns (both sidebars left, both sidebars right, sidebars split). We try and make the layouts work with all of these options, but sometimes it's just not possible. And sometimes styles have different module positions options. My guess would be that there is a mismatch in module positioning options between the journal style you selected and the style of the journal you are viewing, so when you force a journal to display in your style it does weird things with the modules - like putting the active entries box at the top.

I don't know of a way to fix this right now, I'm afraid. But hopefully someone else will come by and see my comment and have more information.

Sorry I can't be more help!

I may be mistaken, but I think the Active Entries box is available to paid users. If you have set your style to override other journal styles, you would have that issue.

In your style's CSS box, enter

Don't change anything else.
