Beginner.

I want to make a layout. I used to edit old layouts on LJ, but that's all the experience I have. Where should a beginner start? Is there a "for beginners" guide or anything anywhere?

Before I point you to the current state of the guides, I should figure out where your experience level lies:

Was it mostly CSS editing you did? Editing in the customization wizard? S2 layer editing?

CSS editing. I did one or two small websites with the help of CSS guides, and basically re-did the entire Generator layout on livejournal. To my collection, I never did any layer editing. Most of my experience came from editing what someone else had made and changing it to something completely different through trial and error.
