The tag list is updated now, but feel free to put input into this. I used s2expressive's tag list as an inspiration and made some modifications so it would match Dreamwidth's style system. I'll put the complete list below the cut since tags that haven't been used yet are automatically set to private (= only maintainers can view them).

I've also started tagging entries, but I think I'll stop now until you got a chance to provide feedback.

EDIT: The tag list is still 'work in progress', so it can still happen that certain tags suddenly stop working.
EDIT 2: All entries are tagged now.

My only comments so far are:

* Some things have a space after the : and some don't, which is not bad but my OCD will probably standardize it one way or the other at some point.

* Is there any way module sections can be modules:sections maybe?

* There is a pageview:reply to be complete about it. The only reason I'm bringing that up is because I, too, forgot about it when doing persistent style=mine, which led to a bug! So it's very fresh in my mind.

Re: module sections - I've thought about it, but then I thought module section is not the same as modules, since module section is the equivalent to 'topbar, sidebar, footer/bottombar'. I guess it doesn't make much of a difference, though, so I'll change it :)

It's good to know about 'pageview: reply' - I had added 'entries:replay page' instead because I didn't quite know how to name it.

Also, I can't believe I missed this but, all of the things you have labeled as themes are technically layouts. A theme is a variation on a layout. We should probably make tags for each layout:

I thought about that, too, but I figured since you've already started calling the layouts 'theme' I'd continue in the same manner. But you have a good point!

One post with all tags is actually a great idea, maybe make it a 'sticky entry', so it's easy to find.

As you've probably also noticed, I've added a few more tags and removed others, I'm not sure we need tags like 'entries:text:color'. It's probably better if we use general tags like 'color' and 'font', what do you think? Also, how should we call those tiny user icons in entries, you know those tiny gray icons (for journals) and those green-blue icons (for communities).

Nah, we should use the right terminology if we're rebooting the tags, otherwise it'll be too confusing. And then change this to:

Since a core layer doesn't have anything to do with themes.

Okay, once this tagging is done, I'll make sure that there's a post that has all of them that haven't been used yet otherwise--I don't think it needs to be easy to find, as a stick entry, since the tags will make quite the list! But it will make it so that all tags will be available for members to use.

I'm good with your pruning and whatnot! Maybe we can call the tiny ones username icons?

Okay, added these tags. Could you maybe take a look at entries tagged with 'theme layer:core1' and 'theme layer:core2' and replace them with the appropriate ones? You know probably a lot more about layers and stuff than I do ;)

One more question: should I also add 'layer:style', or do styles nothing have to do with layers? I guess I still have trouble understanding the difference between layer, style, theme, and layout...

I do not blame you! There is a style system overview, but I will try and give you the rundown:

The style you see on a journal is the end result of a combination of hierarchical layers, with things in later layers overriding things in earlier layers. At the base, you have the core layer. It defines the basic functions all the other layers build on top of.

Next are layout layers. You need a layout layer to have a style! All the others above it are optional.

Next are theme layers. This is where all the layouts get their different "skins" from.

Wizard layers are the layers that happen when somebody uses the customization area to override layout/theme properties (like changing the background color or something).

I've tagged all entries now, but like I said, it would be good if someone could take a look at entries tagged with 'theme layer:core1' and 'theme layer:core2'. I'm not sure I got it right all the time with the new tags ;) Once those entries are correctly re-tagged, 'theme layer:core1' and 'theme layer:core2' can be removed.

A couple of thoughts that have come up along the way:

* There are a few entries without a subject line - it would be good if there would be some general guidelines reminding people to include a descriptive and meaningful subject line.

* Some of the tags need probably some explaining, for instance, I'm not sure that all people know that 'modules:section:two' is the same as 'sidebar(s)' etc.

There's probably more, but that's all I can think of right now :)

Alrighty, I just merged them into layer:core1 and layer:core2--it seems to be pretty much in order, I think I only changed one entry (which would have been understandably tagged core2, and only later revealed in the comments that they should have gone for core1).

The rule of thumb with core1 and core2 is that core1 is what people use for importing LJ layouts and core2 is what people use for native DW layouts.
