Change journal width?

I feel like this is a very stupid question with a very obvious answer, but when using custom CSS themes that state the journal width is changeable, I find that any changes I make to the width under display don't show up. 

Is this because the themes are older and dreamwidth has changed how the coding works somehow? Am I just typing the width into the wrong place? It's very difficult for me to read journals that are the entire width of the screen and prefer them to be much narrower. 

If it makes any difference, the custom themes I've been trying to use USUALLY appear fine in every other regard (although sometimes they look odd, again I'm guessing this is because they are old themes)

Any help is extremely appreciated. Also I apologize if I've done something wrong in posting this. I am very new to journal sites and I'm not quite sure how everything works.

I haven't finished my morning coffee yet, so I hope I can get everything right anyway: You should write the width into the custom CSS. On the custom CSS page you have the option to still use the layout's stylesheet when using a custom stylesheet. If you don't use the layout's stylesheet, nothing you put into the wizard will show up. If you do use the layout's stylesheet, then things from the wizard will show up unless there's something in your custom CSS that overrides it.

When I write into my layouts that width is changeable, what I mean by it is that you can easily change the width by changing just one number, you won't have trouble with images and you won't have to change any other numbers. I guess that's the kind of thing the maker of your layout meant too.
