I want to use layers to make my private entries (the ones only viewable to me) not show up at all on my journal. Is there a way I can do this?

I don't want to do it through CSS because I know that on some pages, an uneven amount of entries will show up, or I'll have previous links on my navigation that go to empty pages.

Hate to break it to you, but I don't think doing it with layers is going to help with that problem--you'll still end up uneven entries and previous links because it's all going to be based on skipping printing entries, not changing the set of entries you get. You can view your journal by different access levels here:

awakened.dreamwidth.org/security/

But that doesn't exclude the one like you want, just picks one of the ones you do want to see.
