I only tested the userpic on the sidebar for Smooth Sailing with this, and it seemed to work. I looked at the userpic urls in Dreamwidth's layout documentation and found these two addresses:
$this.journal.userpic_listing_url
$this.poster.userpic_listing_url
I assume the .journal one is for the sidebar information about a journal or community, and the .poster one is for individual entries on a journal or read page. Does that make sense? So you might need to one in one place and the other in another place.
