I haven't worked with s2 since my LJ paid account expired, but as I recall my process was basically: find the default s2 layer for the layout I'm using (the big honking file with ALL the code the layout uses), locate the relevant area & copy + paste that into a theme layer, faff around until it works. *g*
I really wish I wasn't currently trying to style an LJ comm so I could come play on DW where everything isn't designed to be the biggest possible pain in the ass. (Smooth Sailing uses TABLES as its main structural element I WANT TO CRY.)
