I'm little more than a newbie myself, but here's what I know:
• the odd/even CSS is for if you want to have entries/comments in alternating colours. It's not necessary at all, but I think it's pretty awesome.
• You'll want a {text-decoration:none} to remove the underline, but I can't find dotted underlines on the W3, though I have seen them around. ^^;; Sorry.
