Ah, that's your problem. I bet you're trying to use a core1 style with core2 base. I KNOW THAT SOUNDS HORRIBLY COMPLICATED DO NOT WORRY.
Go here:
http://www.dreamwidth.org/customize/advanced/layers
*Create top-level layer
* Layout, using core version 1 and then click create
The rest is pretty much the same I think.
