Yes! What you're going to want to do is make copies of the layers you are going to edit here:
http://www.dreamwidth.org/customize/advanced/layers?style=site
Then, make a style that has the layers you will be working with:
http://www.dreamwidth.org/customize/advanced/styles
And you can view things in the style you're working on without applying it by clicking on the number link after each style's name, instead of clicking "Use" which will apply the style to your journal.
